PostSubject: Cities of Gor   Mon Oct 29, 2007 8:26 pm

For purposes of convenience [Tarl Cabot speaking in Scroll #4, Nomads of Gor] I am recounting directions in English terms, thinking it would be considerably difficult for the reader to follow references to the Gorean compass. Briefly, for those it might interest, all directions on the planet are calculated from the Sardar Mountains, which for the purposes of calculating direction play a role analogous to our north pole.“The two main directions, so to speak, in the Gorean way of thinking are Ta-Sardar-Var and Ta-Sardar-Ki-Var, or as one would normally say, Var and Ki-Var; 'Var' means a turning and 'Ki' signifies negation; thus, rather literally, one might speak of 'turning to the Sardar' and 'not turning to the Sardar', something like either facing north or not facing north; on the other hand, more helpfully, the Gorean compass is divided into eight, as opposed to our four, main quadrants, or better said, divisions, and each of these itself is of course subdivided. There is also a system of latitude and longitude figured on the basis of the Gorean day, calculated in Ahn, twenty of which constitute a Gorean day, and Ehn and Ihn, which are subdivisions of the Ahn, or Gorean hour. Ta-Sardar-Var is a direction which appears on all Gorean maps; Ta-Sardar-Ki-Var, of course, never appears on a map, since it would be any direction which is not Ta-Sardar-Var.

"Accordingly, the main divisions of the map are Ta-Sardar-Var, and the other seven; taking the Sardar as our 'north pole' the other directions, clockwise as Earth clocks move (Gorean clock hands move in the opposite direction) would be, first, Ta-Sardar-Var, then, in order, Ror, Rim, Tun, Vask (sometimes spoken of as Verus Var, or the true turning away), Cart, Klim, and Kail, and then again, of course, Ta-Sardar-Var.”

The [Thassa-] Cartius River incidentally was named for the direction it lies from the city of Ar.

Anango Island
Anango is a large island not far from Schendi. Similar in some respects to 18th century Jamaica on Earth. Reputed to be the home of mythical "black wizards" though in actuality there is no magic on Gor.

Ar, city of
The largest, most populous, and most luxurious city of Gor. A city of thousands of lofty cylinders, spires, towers, lights, and high bridges lit by lanterns connecting many of the towers are unbelievably exciting and fantastic, particularly as seen from the more lofty bridges on the roofs of the higher cylinders. Ar is most marvelously viewed when seen at night from tarn back. Surrounded by great walls, it's great Gate opens onto the Viktel Aria and there are forty other gates as well. Her politics lack the grandeur of the city itself. Formerly the seat of the Empire of Ar. Located on "the plains" of central Gor, between Vosk R. and Cartius R, and between Voltai Mts. and Thassa. Described as being "low in the temperate zone of the Northern hemisphere of Gor. The powerful of Ar contributed to a disaster in the delta by not supporting their own army against the invading forces of Cos. Her citizenry burned their gates and tore down their walls to aid the Cosians. Those Warriors who were betrayed by their city returned to it; their goal to liberate Ar by whatever means to revenge her humiliation and regain the glory that was hers. It is similar in many respects to the city of Rome upon ancient Earth, with Ubar Marlenus running the city. Citizens of Ar tend to be the most civilized and technologically developed of Goreans, and Ar is a cultural center for much of Gor, setting the prevaling fashions in many other cities. All gorean cities save one are built by free men. It is the largest and most populous city on Gor. Tarn Racing is a favourite pasttime of Arans. Ar has various political factions, the green and steel factions being two of the largest. At war with its ancient enemy, the island Ubarate of Cos. Famous for the Aran kalana - a dry crisp wine. Ar has a famous kaissa player named Scormus who is the champion of the city. City was conquored for a time by Pah Kur, infamous assasin, who learnt the hard way that it doesnt pay not to have honour on Gor.

Ar's Station
An outpost of the Ubarate of Ar and trading station on the south bank of the Vosk, east of Jort's Ferry (on N bank), west of Forest Point, founded four years after Pa-Kur's hordes gathered there, prior to their war against Ar. Ar's station was Ar's stronghold on the Vosk. When Cos landed at Brundisium, and moved it's forces toward Ar's Station, Ar failed to act because of political treachery. Ar's Station eventually fell to Cos, though its Home Stone nevertheless survived and was returned to the town. It is considered an ally of Port Cos. It stands at the northern terminus of the Viktel Aria which leads to Ar, also known as the Vosk Road.

Argentum
A city, nortwest of Ar and a sister city to Tharna. A producer of much of the silver mined on Gor. One of the "Silver-Cities" of the Gorean north. Similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

Asperiche Island, Free Port

Axe Glacier Port

Bazi Free Port
It is a coastal city and a free trade port under the Merchant Law.

Besnit
It is one of three cities, within 100 pasangs of the edge of the Woods of Clearchus. The other two including Esalinius, and Harfax.

Brundisium
One of the largest and busiest ports of Gor and a commercial metropolis, it is 100 pasangs south of the Vosk Delta on the Thassa. The Genesian Road links it with other coastal cities. Through the treachery of her former Ubar, the city of Brundisium, though officially allied with Ar, Brundisium served as the staging point for the Cosian invasion of Ar, which took place several years ago. A large walled city and a salthingyer port with facilities that rival even those of Cos and Tyros, and much of the merchandise and supplies which are transported into the landlocked northern interior come through Brundisium. Needless to say, Brundisium and Ar are no longer allies. Similar to any of the walled seaports of ancient Earth Greece.

Cape Alferd

Corcyrus Port
A city, south of the Vosk River, southwest of Ar, norhteast of Argentum(?), 1000 pasangs West of Thassa(?) A city southwest of Ar, which until recently was ruled by a Tatrix, Sheila of Corcyrus. She was deposed for her tyranny, and, after a lengthy war, the fortunes of the city are again on the rise. Similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

(Note: this is what I personally call the "problem of Corcyrus": Not only can Corcyrus NOT be SW of Ar AND NE of Argentum, since Argentum is supposedly NW of Ar, but since Thassa is to the W and the Voltai Mts. are the Eastern border of known Gor, it cannot be "1000 pasangs West of Thassa." I have placed it 1000 pasangs EAST of Thassa, however, and put it on a more or less straight W-E line with Argentum, in order to stay as close to the description as possible. No way around this one; this is a conundrum, or a typo on Norman's part, one or the other.)

Cos
It is an island 400 pasangs west of Port Kar and hundred pasangs north of Tyros; notable for growing ta-grapes on it's terraced hills and known for its famous wines and its vast fleets of trading ships, as well as its imperialistic tendencies. The perpetual enemy of Ar. It's capitol city is Telnus. Other cities are Selnar, Temos and Jad. As the western border of known Gor, the waters beyond it are referred to as 'the World's End' by those who have first knowledge. To those Goreans with second knowledge, who are taught that Gor is spheroid, the expression is merely a figure of speech. It is Similar in certain respects to Minoan culture.

Edgington

Esalinas
One of three cities, within 100 pasangs of the edge of the Woods of Clearchus. The other two being Besnit and Harfax.

Farnacium

Fort Haskins
Bordered by the southern edge of the Thentis Mountains and the northern range of the Voltai, opens into The Barrens, the world of the Red Savage. Fort Haskins is situated at the east foot of Boswell pass, and which guards the trade routes in that region. Once a trading post maintained by the Haskins Company and later a military outpost flying the flag of Thentis, it's military and strategic influence declined with the development of the Thentesian Tarn cavalries and the growth of the population. It is once again a trading center, maintained by the Caste of Merchants of Thentis. It was once attacked by Port Olni (level with that city). Known for its large contingent of kailla and Tarn cavalry, used to resist and suppress raids by the Red Savages which inhabit the barrens. Similar to various western frontier settlements during the Indian wars of North America on Earth.

Fortress of Saphronicus Merchant City
Former merchant outpost, now city, within several days march of city of Ti.

Free Islands
Free Islands, also known as exchange islands, they are administered as Free Ports by the Merchants. Included are Teletus, Tabor, and Scagnar. Others were Farnacium, Hulneth and Asperiche. In the south are Anango and Ianda, and in the far north, Hunger and Skjern, west of Torvaldsland. These islands, and free ports on the coast such as Lydius and Helmutsport, Schendi and Bazi make possible the commerce between Cos and Tyros and cities of the mainland.

Free Ports
The 4 free ports maintained on the Thassa north and south of the gorean equator are Lydius, Helmutsport, Schendi and Bazi.

Fulvians
In the foothills of the Voltai Mountains, northeast of Ar. The villa district of Ar is found here.

It is the Home Stone of Tarl Cabot, Ko-ro-Ba is found high in the northern latitudes of Gor, northwest of Ar and one thousand pasangs from the Sardar Mountains. Described as a city of lofty cylinders, set among rolling green hills, it was destroyed by the will of the Priest-Kings to enlist Tarl of Ko-ro-ba in a search which would ensure the continuation of their ancient, but endangered species. It is also known as ”The Towers of the Morning," this city was once destroyed but has long since been rebuilt. It is a cultural center similar to Ar, but its citizenry is known for their fierce love of independence. The city produces many excellent Warriors. Port Kar
Facing the gleaming Thassa by way of the Tamber Gulf, is the crowded, squalid, malignant city 100 pasangs from northwest edge at the mouth of the Vosk Delta called Port Kar, and 100 pasangs wouth of nearest solid land. It is sometimes referred to as the Tarn of the Sea. It is the only city on Gor that recognizes a Caste of Thieves, and it is the only city on Gor actually built by slaves under the whip of their Masters. The city is a mass of holdings, each almost a fortress, all crossed and divided by hundreds of canals. Port Kar is ruled by several conflicting Ubars and, under them, the Council of Captains who are responsible for maintaining and managing the great arsenal, as well as the fleets of Port Kar. Her name is a synonym in Gorean for cruelty and piracy. The fleet of tarn ships are the scourge of Thassa plying their trade of plunder and enslavement from the Ta-Thassa Mountains of the southern hemisphere to the ice lakes of the North, westward beyond the terraced island of Cos and rocky Tyros, with its labyrinths of vart caves. Similar to the pirate cities of the Barbary coast during the Golden age of Piracy on Earth, and to Dakar on the Gold Coast of Africa during her slave trading heydey. Tabor, island of
The island in the Thassa, Tabor is one of the other "exchange islands," south of Teletus. Also governed according to merchant law. A free port, allied to no city or Ubarate.

Tabuk's Ford
A peasant village, 400 pasangs north and slightly west of Ar.

"Tabuk's Ford was a large village, containing some forty families; it was ringed with a palisade, and stood like a hub in the midst of its fields, long, narrow, widening strips, which radiated from it like the spokes in a wheel. Thurnus tilled four of these strips. Tabuk's Ford receives its name from the fact that field Tabuk were once accustomed, in their annual migrations, to ford the Verl tributary of the Vosk in its vicinity. The Verl flows northwestward into the Vosk. We had crossed the Vosk, on barges, two weeks ago. The field Tabuk now make their crossing some twenty pasangs northwest of Tabuk's Ford, but the village, founded in the area of the original crossing keeps the first name of the locale. Tabuk's Ford is a rich village, but it is best known not for its agricultural bounty, a function of its dark, fertile fields in the southern basin of the Verl, but for its sleen breeding. Thurnus, of the Peasants, of Tabuk's Ford, was one of the best known of the sleen breeders of Gor."
Book 11, Slave Girl of Gor, page 6

"The girls of Clitus Vitellius, I among them, stood at the line scratched in the dirt within the peasant village of Tabuk's Ford, some four hundred pasangs to the north, and slightly to the west of Ar, some twenty pasangs off the Vosk road to the west."
Book 11, Slave Girl of Gor, pge 7

Tafa Vosk River Port

Tamburg:
"Dietrich of Tamburg, of the high city of Tamburg, some two hundred pasangs to the north and west of Hochburg, both substantially mountain fortresses, both in the more southern and civilized ranges of the Voltai, was well-known to the warriors of Gor."

Teehra District
The district southwest of Tor, bordering on the Tahari.

Teletus Island
Teletus is the largest of the central "exchange islands," governed not by civil authorities but rather according to merchant law. A free port, allied to no city or Ubarate.

"The governance of Lydius, under the merchants, incidentally, is identical to that of the exchange islands, or free islands, in Thassa. Three with which I was familiar, from various voyages, were Tabor, Teletus and, to the north, offshore from Torvaldsland, Scagnar. Of these, to be honest, and to give the merchants their due, I will admit that Tabor and Teletus are rather strictly controlled. It is said, however, by some of the merchants there, that this manner of caution and restriction, has to some extent diminished their position in the spheres of trade."
Book 8, Hunter of Gor, page 42

Temos Port, Isle of Cos

Tentium Port, Isle of Tyros

Teslit

a town located on the Vosk River.
Book 15: Rogue of Gor, page 63

"Tetrapoli, on the other hand, began as four separate towns, Ri, Teibar, Heiban and Azdal, as legend has it founded by four brothers. These towns grew together along the river and were eventaully consolidated as a polity. The four districts of the city, as might be supposed, reatin the names of the original towns. The expression 'Tetrapoli' in Gorean, incidentally, means 'Four Cities' or 'Four Towns.'"
Book 15, Rogue of Gor, pages 61 - 62

Tetropoli Cities of Ri, Teibal, Heiban, and Azdak

Tharna
A harsh and humorless city once ruled by a Tatrix, northeast of Corcyrus, located between Ko-ro-ba and the Sardar. This city, and its sister-city of Argentum to the south, are well known for it's silver mines and production of that metal. A man who visits in Tharna for more than 10 hours is enslaved. The slaves of Tharna are native-born to the city and there are supposedly no free women. The men of Tharna can be recognized by two yellow cords, thrust over the belt which are presented as part of the Home Stone ceremony. It is said that Lara, the former Tatrix, has now abdicated. The Caste of Poets is outlawed here. The one city in all of Ar ruled by a female... Tatrix of Tharna. The male portion of the population has long since regained control over the city, and with the exception of the Tatrix, Tharna is ruled almost entirely by men. There are few freewomen in the city of Tharna, the entire female population consisting almost completely of female slaves. Tharnan Warriors can be distinguished by their blue helmets. Similar in some ways to the ancient Earth city of Carthage.

Thentis
It is located in the Thentis Mountains, and it is renowned for raising tarn flocks and growing blackwine beans. It is located in fertile valley. And is famous for being known as a fortress city in the Mountains of Thentis. It is particularly known for the export of wool from its goat-like mountain hurts. Most of the tarns on Gor are bred here. Not currently at war with anyone, except perhaps the city of Treve. Similar to several Tyrolean mountain cities found in the southern alps in ancient Earth.

ThorsteinLair

Thurmus

Ti
Walled river city situated on the Olni River (a tributory of the Vosk River) north of Tharna. It is the seat of the Salerian Confederation, an alliance of four cities dedicated to the restriction of imperialism and piracy on the Olni River. Known for its superb Warriors. Similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

Tor, city of
A major trading city of the Tahari, in the northeast corner, surrounded by hundreds of communities, some hundreds of pasangs apart. Area to west of Tor is occupied and widely inhabited. Tor is located far southeast of Ar, far northeast of Turia. Tor is the largest and most populous of the desert city-states of Gor. Located in the far south, to the northeast of Turia, at the edge of the vast Tahari wasteland. It is a major trade center and the focal point of hundreds of desert caravan routes. It is also a cultural center for the tribesmen of the Tahari, providing the bulk of trade goods both to and from the desert regions. Similar in many respects to ancient Earth Baghdad.

Torcadino
Because of it's location at the intersection of various routes, the Genesian, the Northern Salt Line, the Northern Silk Road, the Pilgrim's Road, and the Eastern Way (or Treasure Road), Torcadino is a crossroads city. Once an ally of Ar, it served as Cosian stronghold and staging center, until reclaimed by Deitrich of Tarnburg. Torcadino is also notable for it's two aqueducts, built a century ago, which bring fresh waer from the Issus, a northwestwardly flowing tributary of the Vosk River. It is located on "Flats of Sarpeto" at junction of five roads, southeast of Brundisium, southwest of Ar. A walled city-state not unlike Vonda. Similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

Torvaldsland
A cruel, harsh, rocky land located northwest of the Hrimgar Mountains, above the Northern Forests and below the Polar Plain with which it shares the shores of the Arctic Sea. There are many inlets, cliffs and mountains and little arable land. Good soil is rare and highly prized. The Torvaldslanders are seamen, travelling in their oared Serpent ships in search of parsit fish. Their men, fierce and aggresive warriors, prefer the great axe as their weapon. Torvaldsland is not actually a city, but a scattered group of settlements in the far north. Famous for its inhabitants, the Torvaldslanders, who are similar in most respects to Earth Vikings of the early medieval period. Known for its superb sailors and the rough mannerisms of its denizens.

Treve
A little known city that lies among the vast terrain of the rugged Voltai, 700 pasangs north of Ar, located between Ar and the Sardar Mts. It's location is secret and is said to be accessible only by tarn. Sometimes called 'The Tarn of the Voltai' because of it's lofty perch. (According to Norman this city's location is secret and is not indicated on any map, only the territory claimed by the city. I have obeyed this convention therefore.) It has little or no agriculture, and exists solely through raiding and warfare. Known for its fierce independence, its love of warfare and its superb tarnsmen. Currently at war with practically everyone, notably the city of Ko-ro-ba. Many years ago it was the target of a retributory tarn strike by the forces of Ar, which turned out to be the largest and bloodiest tarn battle in the history of Gor, in which thousands of tarnsmen clashed in aerial battle for days. It ended in a draw... Ar did not pierce the defenses of Treve, but Treve suffered terrible casualties in fending them off. Neither side wishes to repeat the action, and Treve no longer raids the territories of Ar. Treve is similar in certain respects to the ancient Earth city of Sparta. The Tarnsman of Treve are said not to ever purchase a slave: they steal or claim such an animal. Slaves can't escape from Treve.

Turia
A major city-state of Gor situated south of the equator on the plains of Turia. Turia is said to be named for the Tur tree, especially one found near a stream. Turia counts it years from summer solstice to summer solstice. It's wealth and opulence is well known and the city is often referred to as the 'Ar of the south'. At the time of Tarl Cabot's first visit inside the walled, nine-gated stronghold, she had never been conquered. For hundreds of years, she had maintained an uneasy trade relationship with the inhabitants of the plains, the nomadic Tribes of the Wagon Peoples. Sacked and conquered by Kamchak, the eventual Ubar San of the Wagon Peoples, she was ultimately spared, her Home Stone untouched out of sentiment. The mother of the Ubar San had been Turian. It is the largest of the southern Gorean cities. It is an opulant trade center similar in many ways to Constantinople on ancient Earth.

Turmas
A Turian outpost in the southeast edge of the Tahari. (Norman uses a variation of the same name, "Turmus," to specify another city at the edge of the Vosk Delta.)

Turmus
The last major port on the Vosk before the marshes of the Vosk Delta. Located on the north bank of the Vosk.

last major port on the Vosk before the marshes.
Book 13: Explorers of Gor. page 16

"Caravans with goods tend to travel the western, or distant eastern edge of the Tahari; caravans do, it might be mentioned, occasionally travel from Tor or Kasra to Turmas, a Turian outpost and kasbah, in the southeastern edge of the Tahari, but even these commonly avoid the dune country, either moving south, then east, or east, then south, skirting the sands. Few men, without good reason, enter the dune country."
Book 10, Tribesmen of Gor

Tyros
An island of the Thassa, 400 pasangs west of Port Kar and one hundred pasangs south of Cos. It's capitol city is Kasra. Another major city is Tentium. Tyros is a rugged mountainous island known for it's vart caves. The varts are trained to be used as weapons. As the western border of known Gor, the waters beyond it are referred to as 'the World's End' by those who have first knowledge. To those Goreans with second knowledge, who are taught that Gor is spheroid, the expression is merely a figure of speech. Also known for its great fleets of raiding ships. Similar in certain respects to the ancient Earth island of Crete.

Ukungu
A sovereign free state inside Empire of Bila Haruma

Ven
A Vosk River town, east of Turmus, on the south bank of the Vosk.

"He had won her in Girl Catch, in a contest to decide a trade dispute between two small cities, Ven and Rarn, the former a river port on the Vosk, the second noted for its copper mining, lying southeast of Tharna."
Book 11, Beasts of Gor, page 3

"'What lies west on the Vosk,' asked Aemilianus.
'On the southern bank, Ven,' said Marcus. Turmus, which is the last major town west on the Vosk, is on the northern bank.
'And what beyond Ven?' asked Aemilianus.
'The Delta'"
Book 23, Renegades of Gor, page 24

Venna
A resort city west of Voltai and 200 pasangs north of Ar, between Ar and the Vosk River on the Viktel Aria. Well known for it's tharlarion races, it is a common locale for the villas of the rich, usually from Ar. Known as a Resort City.

Victoria
A port town located on the Vosk River, one of the founding members and headquarters of the Vosk League, consisting of 19 river towns united against river piracy on the Vosk. Known as a haven for pirates, and for it's slave markets. On the north bank of Vosk River, between Fina and Tafa. A thriving river town which was instrumental in the defeat of the Vosk Pirates several years ago.

Vonda
A city, located on Olni River, on the north bank, north of Lara. A fairly large port city on the Olni river, which took part in a disastrous territorial war against Ar several years ago. Now rebuilt, it is known for its production and training of male Gladitorial fighting slaves. It is therefore a large Gladitorial center. Free women are typically well-received there, and several of the training houses are owned by such free women. Similar to any of the walled city-states of ancient Earth Greece.

Vosk River Towns, from the West to the East, in order:
Turmus, Ven, Tetrapoli, Port Cos, Tafa, Victoria, Fina, Ragnar's Hamlet, Hammerfest, Sulport, Sais, Siba, Jasmine, Point Alfred, Jort's Ferry, Forest Port, Iskander, Tancred's Landing, Whitewater. Most major towns on N bank of Vosk River. Jasmine and Siba are "centrally located between Olni River and Vosk Delta." Whitewater and Lara are far E on Vosk River, where Vosk River joins the Olni River.

Wands, perimeter
Marking the boundary or Ihanke of The Barrens are hundreds of markers, seven to eight feet high made of peeled Ka-la-na wood, tipped with yellow, black-tipped feathers of the Herlit.

White Water
A city located on the northern shore of the Vosk River, east of Tancred's Landing. It is east of Ar's Station, and is the farthest east on Vosk, but west of Lara (on Olni).

Woodhaven

NOTE: It is advised that you choose your city carefully, since once you have chosen one it is typically difficult if not impossible to change your mind. To do so is to display to all that the loyalty to a particular Home Stone means little or nothing to you. Remember, slaves have no city or Home Stone once they are enslaved. Knowing what city you are from can be helpful in determining your particular cultural attributes, however.
